Classified: Yugoslavia

Project type

Conceptual Photography

Date

July 2026

Classified: Yugoslavia is a photography project exploring Yugoslav memorabilia through the concept of an unsolved case. Personal and historical objects from the period are presented as pieces of evidence, as if they were clues in an investigation into a country that no longer exists.

Each photographed object is accompanied by a numbered marker, inspired by the way evidence is documented at a crime scene. A small note attached to each object provides information about what it is, when it is from, and its significance, creating a sense of an officially documented investigation.

The project begins with a police-report-style document introducing Yugoslavia and raising the central question: Why did Yugoslavia fall apart? The evidence is then presented as an attempt to uncover the answer. However, no definitive conclusion is given. The case intentionally remains unsolved, leaving the viewer to interpret the evidence and form their own opinion about Yugoslavia and its collapse.

The project concludes with a torn map of former Yugoslavia, symbolizing its end, but without explaining why it happened. The answer is ultimately left to the viewer.
